WBCS Exam Pattern 2023:

Before knowing about the WBCS syllabus 2023 let’s know about the exam patterns first. The WBCS exam is conducted in three stages, they are:

  1. Preliminary Exam
  2. Mains Exam
  3. Interview

WBCS Preliminary Exam Pattern :

The preliminary examination is the first stage of the WBCS selection process. It consists of a single paper of 200 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) carrying 200 marks. The preliminary exam is a screening test and only qualified candidates can proceed to the next stage.

WBCS Mains Exam Pattern:

The main exam is the second stage of the WBCS selection process. It consists of six compulsory papers and two optional subjects. The time allotted for each paper will be 3 hours. Candidates shortlisted in this test will appear for the interview process.

WBCS Interview Process:

Candidates who qualify for the main exam are called for the final stage, the personality test. There is no specific syllabus for personality tests. It totally depends on Interview board members who will have a record of the candidate’s career and interests filled by the candidate in the application form. Hence, candidates must have a thorough knowledge of their subject as well as an awareness of current affairs to score higher on the personality tests.

WBCS Syllabus 2023 For Prelims Exam:

In the preliminary examination, there will be only one paper on General Studies. There will be an objective-type paper consisting of 200 multiple-choice type questions. The paper will carry a total of 200 marks and will be of 2½ hours in duration. The paper will contain questions from the following topics given below:

WBCS Syllabus 2023 For Mains Exam:

The WBCS Mains exam consists of six compulsory papers and one optional subject which consists of two papers. Candidates appearing in Group A and Group B examinations only have to appear for optional subjects.

Candidates enrolled for Group C and Group D will have to appear in the examination on six compulsory papers only. They will not have to give any optional paper tests.

Six compulsory papers and two optional subjects will carry 200 marks each. The duration for all the papers is 3 hours.

Deduction of marks in the WBCS Exam :

A deduction of 10% of full marks shall be made from the total marks secured by a candidate in a particular paper if he/she discloses his/her identity by writing his/her name, roll number or by putting any identifying marks in the answer script of that paper.
There shall be a negative marking for each wrong answer to the multiple-choice questions (MCQ) type.
