List of Biosphere Reserves in India PDF 2023

Biosphere reserves in India are designated areas that promote the harmonious coexistence of animals and nature. India is home to a remarkable network of 18 Biosphere Reserves, each with a distinct ecosystem, flora and fauna. They act as living laboratories for sustainable development, conservation and research.

The Biosphere Reserves play an important role in conserving endangered species and protecting delicate ecosystems. They provide a safe haven for countless extinct plant and animal species.

From the mysterious Western Ghats in the south to the enchanting Sundarbans in the east, India’s biosphere reserves are vast. For example, the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is famous for having the highest concentration of wild elephants and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sundarbans, the world’s largest delta, is famous for its Royal Bengal Tiger and unique mangrove ecosystem.

There are currently a total of 738 biosphere reserves in 134 countries, including 22 transboundary sites.

Three Main Zones of Biosphere Reserves:

The total area of a biosphere reserve is divided into three zones, namely the core area, the buffer zone and the transition zone.

1. Core Area:

Core Area is a completely safe and secure ecosystem. It may contain native flora and fauna. It contributes to the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic diversity. A core area is a national park or sanctuary that is managed and protected by the Wildlife Act of 1972.

2. Buffer Zone:

The buffer zone surrounds the core zone. It includes restoration, limited tourism, fishing, grazing, etc. The region is compatible with some good environmental practices that can strengthen scientific research, monitoring, training and education.

3. Transition Area:

It is the outermost part of the Biosphere Reserve. These include settlements, cropland, managed forests and areas for intensive recreation and other economic uses of the region. It is the region of cooperation where human enterprise and conservation coincide.
